Assignment 1: Help One Character Who is Afraid of Another

The goal of this assignment was to create a world where one character was afraid of another where the guest would help mediate the conflict. A good assignment for VR, but my team was assigned the Jam-o-drum, a four-person gaming table with simple controls.

The result was Evac Ants, a tunnel traveling game very loosely based off of the S.T.U.N Runner arcade game. In this game three players are ants who attempt to pick up babies stranded in the tunnel and get them to a bunker at the end. The fourth player is an evil spider chasing the ants. His goal is to eat as many babies as possible. The ants win if they reach the end of the tunnel with collectively at least 4 babies in tow. If the spider wins if he can keep the ants from saving enough babies.

In my opinion, this project could have turned out a lot better, mostly because everyone on the team was still learning their tools, but the feedback was great. My favorite comments were "we're picking nits here, but we're also comparing it to something I'd be ready to drop a quarter into. Getting that far in two weeks is amazing," and "I made some comments on this project less than 24 hours ago. It's amazing how much you've improved it since then." As a result, I came to have a very high opinion of the result. However, comparing it to the rest of the semester and seeing player's frustrations as they try to play it, I see now that the glowing comments were in relation to other round 1 projects. People did want to see this done right, but since it would have to be redone from scratch since we didn't know our tools very well I'm happy to let it rest as a good first round project.
